Summary
On Sunday 16th March 2025, The People’s Comedy School hosted a dynamic one-day workshop, designed to help young adults (aged 18-25) develop their comedic voice, build confidence in public speaking (see the chart below to see the difference made), and explore the power of honest storytelling.
Participants created a 5-minute stand-up piece in a day, guided by experienced, friendly, and inclusive comedy facilitators. No prior experience was needed, just a desire to find their comedic voice and the willingness to have a go.
The workshop was supported by 3 facilitators.
Through a mix of discussion, practical exercises, and performance, participants learned how to craft and deliver engaging stories, embrace awkwardness, and find humour in personal experiences. With expert guidance and supportive feedback, they had the opportunity to refine their material and connect with an audience in an authentic way.
Key skills gained:
Participants highlighted significant development in their comedy writing skills, including the ability to "mine" for humour in everyday situations and craft engaging material. They also gained practical experience in editing and refining their comedic pieces.
A key takeaway was the enhanced ability to take and utilise feedback, fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere among the "creative youths". Several participants noted a newfound confidence in performing stand-up, with some expressing a desire to "gig" and pursue it further.
The workshop also provided a foundation for devising a comedy set, transforming the perceived "unachievable beast" into a manageable and exciting prospect. Many felt they had "found more of their voice" in comedy, thanks to the practical advice and skill development offered.
Transferable life skills:
Participants reported that the workshop had a positive impact on various aspects of their lives beyond comedy. It fostered improved self-expression and boosted self-belief. The opportunity to connect with other "creatives" was highly valued, leading to new friendships.
Several participants noted the transferability of the skills learned to other areas, such as public speaking, presenting (for "socials and radio"), and compèring. The workshop also provided a boost to their overall creative endeavours, helping them confront and manage anxieties associated with creative pursuits.
What was most enjoyed:
Participants consistently praised the friendly and welcoming environment, highlighting the supportive and nurturing atmosphere created by the facilitators. The approachability and helpfulness of the professionals running the workshop were repeatedly mentioned, with attendees appreciating the first-hand feedback and the opportunity for practice.
The diverse backgrounds of the facilitators were seen as a significant strength, creating a sense of inclusion and shared experience among the participants. The workshop was described as open and accepting, fostering a space where individuals felt comfortable expressing themselves.
The practical aspects of the workshop were also well-received, with attendees valuing the chance to talk to other participants, observe their performance skills, and bounce ideas off one another. The regular opportunities to try out jokes were seen as beneficial, and the free food was a welcome bonus.
Many participants expressed a desire to attend a longer course with the same facilitators, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the workshop experience.
